3,400+ Playing Card Back Stock Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics & Clip Art

Before saving the file, put each multi-layer illustration into a folder/group in Photoshop and center it. When the artwork looks good, save each card as its own high-resolution flat 300dpi or 600dpi CMYK TIF file (a PNG also works fine, I’m old-fashioned). This is the finished card art that will be imported into our Illustrator deck master file.

Minor typography and pips can also be added at this point, but I find it better to add those final touches in Illustrator – we’re heading back there anyway to lay out the deck. To begin, each character is exported from illustrator as a large 600dpi transparent PNG and opened in Adobe Photoshop for some quick editing. Printing requires artwork to be at least 300dpi, so I export big just to be safe. Facsimile of Winstanley’s Geographical cards produced by Harold & Virginia Wayland, 1967. Free reinterpretation of the traditional Paris pattern courts by the artist Claude Weisbuch. A miniature set of Goodall domino cards (5.9 x 3.5 cms) still in perfect condition.

It is important to choose a paper that is compatible with your printer if you plan on printing the inserts. Rather than a traditional tuck box, the 2022 Cryptids of North America deck got a little crafty with its packaging. The initial concept was to have tuck boxes that were constructed of cryptid skins—fur, scales, leather and so on—largely because fancy tuck boxes were not in the budget.

Functional, or Not: Cards

Clearly designed to catch an eye across the room, the bright pops of color combined with retro color palettes will certainly trigger nostalgia and charm among certain demographics. The typeface is bold and unique to the point of being memorable, and this photographer and creative director’s brand remains consistent across her website and social media. As long as there are parties, industry events, and networking opportunities, there will be business cards. And it's important that yours isn't thrown to the bottom of the pile because of a lackluster design. Playability and card handling is king, so my budget always starts by choosing the best card stock available.

What to Put on the Back of Handmade Cards

A business card, a functional comb and a musical instrument, this salon’s innovative branding is as unique as it is usable. While it may seem gimmicky, this lightweight plastic business card will still comfortably slide into a wallet or fit in a standard business card holder. This graphic designer’s business card is simple, charming and stands out in a crowd.

The fur idea got dropped early due to production complications (cutting and stitching was too time consuming and messy). What remains are shrink-wrapped decks lovingly placed in various handmade leather pouches. Each pouch also makes an excellent dice container (holds 2 full sets) and can be repurposed to whatever your heart desires. Stay away from “custom playing card” junk like 4 Imprint, Zazzle, and Shutterfly unless all you need is to slap a logo on a deck and care nothing about quality.

All the sketches were imported into Adobe Illustrator and vectored by hand using a small assortment of brushes, textures, and colors. Since this will be a printed product I’ll be working exclusively in CMYK. Making art in Illustrator is my bag, baby, because I can later scale these up for tarot cards, t-shirts, posters, and more. Gimmicks can be fun, but unless carefully designed to match your brand, they may just come off tacky or immature. Always focus first and foremost on high-quality prints of well-designed, aesthetically pleasing cards. The line between functional business cards and hilarious gimmicks can be a tough one to find, but even the silliest of business cards can still get the job done. Functional business cards can have serious longevity if your customers can actually use them. Even business cards that aren’t actually cards—for instance, combs, toothbrushes or pens with contact information printed on them—are more likely to be kept around much longer. A less-functional gimmick may be fun for a moment, but may be quickly forgotten.

How do you wrap a handmade card?

The advent of the 21st century meant the beginning of the digital address book and the beginning of the end for the Rolodex. Now, social media, online advertising and email have replaced Yellow Pages, radio ads and word of mouth as the primary means of business promotion. But despite the near-ubiquitous prevalence of the new digital promotion tactics, plenty of business is still conducted with business cards.

This roofing company’s business card is on-brand, unique and foldable—turning from a 2D card into a 3D slate-tiled, pitched roof. The typography of the card is clean and minimalist, with a single block of neatly justified text. The inside of the card also features Andrew Murray Roofing’s simple, text-less logo, which fits in well with the monochromatic, minimalist style. The simple fold turning the card into a three-dimensional roof keeps the folding-business-card effect from feeling too gimmicky while still elevating the experience for potential customers.
